Review page metadata and keep old links working when addresses change.

Search metadata describes a page to search engines and link previews. It is separate from the text visitors see on the page.

Edit page metadata

  1. Open Content or Content/Store.
  2. Open the page or post.
  3. Find its SEO fields.
  4. Review the title, description, and any social sharing image or settings shown.
  5. Save and check the page.

Write a title that names the page and a description that explains its content. If a page is missing these fields, ask in Site Design to check its metadata.

Keep or change an address

Before changing a slug, check whether the page was imported with an original address. Imported pages may keep their original path. Ask OffPress to check the current route if changing the slug does not change the address you see.

Keep useful existing addresses when possible. If an address changes, add a redirect.

Add a redirect

  1. In Content Admin, open Redirects.
  2. Create a record with the old path in From, such as /old-workshops.
  3. Put the destination in To, such as /workshops.
  4. Choose 301 Permanent for a lasting move or 302 Temporary for a temporary one.
  5. Turn on Active and save.
  6. Open the old address and confirm it reaches the intended page.

Do not point an address back to itself or create a chain that loops between pages.

Check after launch

Test important old links on your live domain, including links from other sites and older posts. Search engines can take time to reflect changes; a correct preview does not guarantee a search ranking.

For visitor counts, see Site analytics.
